In large bowl add warm water. Slowly stir in yeast. Continue to stir until yeast is dissolved. Add salt, sugar, shortening, and milk. Stir. M ix in 2 cups of flour. If needed add more flour until dough chases spoon around the bowl. Not all of the flour needs to be used. Turn dough out onto floured board and knead, adding little bits of flour s needed, until the dough is soft and smooth, not sticky. Put dough in buttered bowl, turn dough over so the top is greased. Cover and let rise in war spot for an hour. Punch dough down. Turn out onto floured board and knead. Preheat oven to 375°F. Form dough into loaf and set in buttered pan. Cover and let rise for 30 mins. Score dough by cutting 3 slashes across the top with a sharp knife. Put in oven and bake for about 45 mins or until golden brown and sounding hollow when hit. Turn out bread and let cool on a rack or clean dishtowel.
